Opportunities for Students Interested in Virginia Government and the Virginia Judicial System

courthouse photoThe Augusta County Circuit Court Clerk's office is seeking high school and college students who wish to serve as interns.  This opportunity will provide mentorship and career information for students who want to experience first-hand the work of the Circuit Court and the Clerk’s Office. 

The Clerk's office is in downtown Staunton at the Augusta County Courthouse. The Clerk serves as the recorder of deeds and probate judge, issues marriage licenses and is the official court administrator for all civil and criminal cases. The Clerk also creates and maintains all court files and records, prepares court orders and jury lists, contacts jurors, and issues summons and court processes.

Internship Skills Required

The skills required for a Clerk’s Office Intern include: excellent customer service; attention to detail; ability to multi-task under pressure; work as a team player; ability to follow directions and willingness to learn; and proficiency in operating a computer, telephone, copier, and fax machine. 

Internship Duties 

As an intern, you will assist the Clerk’s Staff with several assignments and tasks, including:

  • answering the telephone
  • assisting with general office work
  • assisting the general public
  • researching answers to questions from the general public and staff
  • work on specific projects assigned by the Clerk of Circuit Court
  • assignments to work with civil, criminal, court administration, land record, probate, and accounting divisions

The Clerk’s Office Intern will also be asked to provide a set schedule of when he or she is available and will agree to work a certain number of hours per week. In addition to a set schedule, the intern and Clerk of Circuit Court will develop a work plan for projects and the day-to-day assignments.  If you are using the internship for credit, you will need to provide the internship requirements and parameters to the office before beginning.
