As the County of Augusta undergoes its reassessment process, we understand the concerns that residents may have regarding the increase in assessments.  We acknowledge the impact that these reassessments can have on our community.

Board Chair Jeff Slaven emphasized, "We recognize the anxiety that residents may feel as a result of the reassessment process. As stewards of our community, it is our responsibility to ensure that we strike a balance between fiscal responsibility and addressing the needs of our residents."

The reassessment process is an integral part of maintaining fairness and equity in our tax system. It is mandated by the state and allows us to accurately reflect the changing property values within our county, ensuring that each property owner pays their fair share of taxes based on the current market conditions.

Property owners have the right to appeal their reassessed values if they believe they do not accurately represent their property's value or are inconsistent with similar properties. Appeals can be made to the Augusta County Reassessment Office, the Board of Equalization, or the Circuit Court, and we encourage residents to use the process outlined in the notices and on the county website. Please start communications about your appeal by March 18, 2024.

Furthermore, as we move forward with the budgeting process and set tax rates, the Board of Supervisors will carefully consider the impact on our residents. We are committed to finding solutions that minimize the burden on taxpayers while still meeting the essential needs of our community.

We encourage residents to actively participate in the public hearings and discussions regarding the budget and proposed tax rates. Your input is invaluable to us as we make decisions that affect the entire community.

Together, we will work towards a balanced approach that ensures the continued prosperity and well-being for Augusta County citizens. We want to assure our residents that their voices are heard and their concerns are taken into consideration.
