What are the office hours of the Sheriff’s Office? 
The Augusta County Sheriff’s Office has both office personnel and essential personnel. The office personnel generally work 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. However, the essential personnel are available 24 hours per  day. This includes personnel that man the public window in the lobby of the Sheriff's Office. If you need  something, anytime day or night, someone will be there to assist you. You can call the office at 540-245-5333. The office is located at 127 Lee Hwy Verona, VA 24482.

How do I get a warrant?
In order to obtain a warrant you must appear in person before a State Magistrate and you must provide a probable cause for the issuance of the warrant. There is no cost involved and the State Magistrate’s Office is located at the Sheriff’s Office, 127 Lee Highway, Virginia. You may also speak with the magistrate at (540) 245-5015.

How can I receive a copy of a crime report?
It is the policy of the Augusta County Sheriff’s Office to treat every request for records as a request under the Virginia Freedom of Information Act, Chapter 37, 2.2-3700 – 2.2-3714. The person requesting public records shall identify the records with reasonable specificity and a public copy will be given unless it will compromise an ongoing investigation. This service is provided free of charge to the person(s) involved. A small fee may be charged to other persons and insurance companies.

How can I contact a specific deputy?
Please call the office anytime and ask for the specific deputy or investigator and the dispatcher will either connect you to their voicemail or try to get them directly on the line.

What is the Augusta County Noise Ordinance?
The County Noise Ordinance has specific time frames where deputies can enforce and is expressed in County Code:

15-7. Maximum sound levels in county. 

(a) Sound producing and sound-reproducing devices. The use operation or playing of any radio, phonograph, television, record, compact disc, tape, digital music, MP3 or DVD player, musical instrument, loudspeaker, sound amplifier or other machine or device capable of producing or reproducing sound, regardless of where such sound-producing or sound reproducing machine or device is located, whether indoor or outdoor, in such a manner or with such volume that it exceeds 65dBA at the property line, from which the sound emanates, shall be a violation of this article. This section is applicable 24 hours a day.

(b) In all other cases, no person shall permit, operate or cause any source of sound to exceed a sound level of 65dBA, when measured at or outside the property boundary, from which the sound emanates, during the hours between 11:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m.

(c) Measurements in multi-family structures. In a structure used as a multi-family dwelling the Sheriff's department may take measurements to determine such sound levels from common areas within or outside the structure or from other dwelling units within the structure, when requested to do so by the owner or tenant in possession and control thereof. Such measurement shall be taken at a point at least four feet from the wall, ceiling or floor nearest the noise source, with doors to the receiving area closed and windows closed.

What causes delays in responses to calls for service?
A number of factors can contribute to delays in response time such as priority calls, traffic accidents, assisting other officers.

How can I request an Extra Patrol or a Radar Patrol?
Call the office and try to give the dispatcher as much information as you can about the situation. She will type a note for our briefing board that all the deputies read through daily. The request for radar patrol is initially taken by the dispatcher and then given to our Lt of Traffic and then dispersed to the deputies that run radar.

How do I obtain No Trespass papers?
You can obtain No Trespassing papers here at the office or ask any deputy you see on patrol that will have the forms in their car. Although we do not serve them we provide them free of charge. We recommend that you fill out the form and make a copy for your records. It is the citizen’s responsibility to have them served by a civil process server for a small fee or mailed certified through the post office. We do not keep served trespassing papers on file therefore it is up to the citizen to keep track.

How do I get a Protective Order?
In emergency situations, a law enforcement officer may request an Emergency Protective Order immediately; an EPO will be requested automatically if an arrest for assault and battery has been made. An EPO expires 72 hours after its issuance or, if the Court is not then in session, at 5:00pm on the next business day that the Court is in session.

You can obtain a Preliminary Protective Order if you were recently subjected to family abuse or are in immediate and present danger of family abuse. To start the process, you must go to the intake office at the Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court and file a written petition. A Preliminary Protective Order lasts for 15 days is effective after personal service on the abuser.

A Court will issue a Permanent Protective Order if the Court finds that the victim has proven their allegation of family abuse. A Permanent Protective Order will be valid for a specific amount of time up to 2 years.

What times do you process Concealed Weapons Applications?

The first thing to do is obtain the concealed weapon permit application at the Augusta County Circuit Court. Fees are $40.00 for first time applicants and $40.00 for renewal. You will need a valid picture ID and certificate of firearms training. If you were in the military then you will need form DD214.

The permit is valid for five years and you should receive it between 4-6 weeks after processing. You may be denied a permit for the following reasons:

  • Convicted of a felony
  • If you have received a mental health treatment or substance abuse treatment in a residential setting within five years prior to the date of application. 
  •  Dishonorable discharge from the U.S. Military 
  •  An alien, other than an alien lawfully admitted for permanent residence in the U.S.

How can I get a copy of Criminal Records?
There are two methods of obtaining a criminal history record name searches pursuant to 19.2-389 of the Code of Virginia. Listed below are the two required forms:

1) Criminal History Records Check (SP-167)
Criminal history record dissemination is governed by Section 19.2-389 of the Code of Virginia.

Requests for criminal record searches must be executed by the submission of a signed and notarized “Criminal Record Name Search” form SP-167. The instructions for the completion of this form are included with the document. This form can be viewed, downloaded and/or printed by visiting the Virginia State Police Forms page.

Examples of entities/individuals eligible to use this form are:

  • Individuals
  • General Public
  • Private Companies

2) Criminal History Records Check (SP-230)

Criminal history record dissemination submitted on the SP-230 is governed by Section 19.2-389 of the Code of Virginia. Pursuant to this section, the following non-criminal justice entities are empowered to receive criminal record name searches using the SP-230 form. This form does not require notarization.

  • Domestic/International Adoptions and Foster Care Agencies
  • Hospital Pharmacy Employees
  • Adult Home Care Facilities
  • Licensed Homes for Adults
  • District Homes for Adults
  • Adult Day Care Centers
  • Licensed Child Care Centers
  • Unlicensed Child Care Centers
  • Cities/Counties Under a Duly Enacted Ordinance

How do I pay a speeding ticket?
If you received the ticket in Augusta County, you may call the Augusta County General District Court at 540-245-5300. The Court is located at, 6 E. Johnson St. Staunton, VA 24401, 2nd floor.

How can I get fingerprinted for a job application?
It is best to come to the office for fingerprinting between the hours of 7:00am to 3:30pm when our daylight personnel is here. Please bring the fingerprint cards if they have been provided by your employee and your driver’s license. We charge a fee of $10.00 per person and will accept cash or check.
